A winter capsule wardrobe (my first one!)

December 17, 2015

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I’d been inspired by Vivianna Does Makeup and her capsule wardrobe to give it a go myself – and I’ve actually gone and done it! Just to recap, the basic premise of  a capsule wardrobe is that it’s a small collection of clothes that you love and that you can mix together – usually about 30 items (I’ve linked to some of my favourite capsule wardrobe bloggers below if you want to find out more). The idea is that it takes the time and stress out of deciding what to wear so you can spend that time doing something else.

capsule wardrobe

It started with another big wardrobe purge – and I honestly felt a bit sick about the amount of clothes I was getting rid of again (all I could think about was the money I’d wasted). But getting rid of all those clothes did make me feel really motivated to give this a go properly and start making better buying choices from now on.

One of the key rules of a capsule wardrobe is that once you’ve created your capsule, you don’t go clothes shopping. Instead, you have a capsule wardrobe for each season, and although you might add to it when you change over for the next, you go for three months without buying any clothes.

I decided not to buy anything new for a few weeks – to just live with the clothes I’d kept and see where the holes were in my wardrobe. For me, the idea of approaching my wardrobe as a whole and mixing and matching more pieces was a big change in mindset. Until I started my capsule wardrobe, I had been guilty of wearing pretty much the same jeans, shoes and coat all the time and only switching up the top. Now, I’m trying to wear something completely different every day to force myself to experiment a bit more.

Paying it forward

December 13, 2015

I think one of the main things I realised when I had a child – aside from how absurdly difficult it is to do simple daily tasks with a new baby and no sleep – is how useless I had been to friends who had already had babies. I had felt delighted for my new-mum friends and genuinely excited to meet their babies, and I would have been willing to help them in any way if they had asked for something. The trouble was, having not experienced the challenges of new parenthood, I had absolutely no idea what it was that my friends might need. So I would merrily turn up for an afternoon with a homemade cake, cuddle the baby, distribute presents, chat about the goings on in the outside world, and then be on my way, duty done. On the journey home, my mind would fill with blissful soft-focus vignettes about life with a new baby, drawn mainly from sentimental ads for nappy and formula. And that would be that for a few months.

What I didn’t know at the time was that the parents had probably made a monumental effort to make their lives look halfway normal before I arrived – and that even if they were moved to ask me for help, they probably wouldn’t have known what exactly to ask for.

When Oscar was born, the penny dropped: I had been a bad friend without even meaning to. Continue Reading…

Useful and affordable luxury beauty Christmas gift ideas

Affordable beauty gifts

That’s a lot of claims in the post title! But I wouldn’t have written it if I didn’t personally own and love each and every one of the items I’ve chosen here. It’s easy enough to write an aspirational gift guide, and it’s quite a lot of fun too, but what you want when it’s December and you’ve still got a tonne of presents to buy is some reliable recommendations for stuff that really does work.

For context, my general philosophy on gift-giving is that you should give something the recipient wants and you’re pretty sure they’re going to love, and that it should be something they don’t feel they can splash the cash on in a regular month. Beauty gifts are perfect for this type of giving, and while I love cheap make-up as much (if not more) than the next gal, I also love to spend a bit more here and there where I can and delight in receiving these sort of things as gifts.

The present I buy for everyone

December 10, 2015

How’s your Christmas shopping going? If you’re already totally stressed about it, then may I suggest my failsafe option? Pyjamas! Everyone loves new PJs – mums, dads, sisters, kids, friends – and they work for every budget, too.

Last year was our first Christmas at home and we hosted most of Pete’s family, including his three little nephews. I bought everyone new PJs, and we opened this present on Christmas Eve so that everyone could wear theirs in the morning when we opened the rest. Chic, cosy pyjamas are also useful for wearing on Boxing Day while you watch Christmas films and eat Celebrations.

I’ve rounded up some of my favourites below, so that if you’re so inclined you can get all your Christmas shopping done in one round of online ordering. Boom! (fist pump emoji)

SFTW: Bribery, a genius Christmas tree idea and inspirational gift guides

December 6, 2015

mini Christmas tree

Happy Sunday everyone! I’ve had a couple of really busy weeks (I feel like we always start these posts with something along these lines…) that have included actual evenings out and full weekends. It’s been fun, but I couldn’t wait to do nothing this weekend and just hang at home. Like Rose, I really need regular alone time.

Being busy also means I’ve been struggling to fit in my daily yoga. Actually, it’s not so much the fact that I’ve been busy, more that I’m too knackered/lazy to do it in the evening, which is the only free time I have at the moment. But I keep trying, and when I do have a bit of a time, I love the videos in this Yoga for weight loss series. Don’t worry: they’re not super-hard, just hard enough to feel like you’ve worked out while still being relaxing.

The one thing on my to-do list this weekend is to get a Christmas tree. Continue Reading…

31 things (I think) I know at 31

December 3, 2015

Tomorrow I turn 31, and while last year I treated you to some reasons why I am in love with getting older (and they still hold true), this year I am sharing some of the things that I am pretty sure I know with all the accumulated wisdom of my 31 years.

  1. Everyday30Applying a full-face of make-up that gives the illusion you’re wearing none is both incredibly time-consuming and immensely satisfying – just be ready for people to tell you you look tired on the days you can’t be arsed.
  2. An aggressive hypothetical is a great defence in any argument- ‘Would I do something like that, though? WOULD I??!”
  3. If your hair is prone to frizz then feel no shame in whipping out your umbrella at the slightest hint of a shower. Hair is more important than not looking like a wuss in front of strangers on the street.
  4. Coffee after lunch probably does interfere with your sleep no matter how much you believe caffeine ‘just doesn’t affect’ you.
  5. You can’t make an old friend. (OK, I stole this one from Kenny Rogers but it’s wonderful and true.)
  6. Literally NO ONE cares about your stuff as much as you do and this is mostly a good thing.
  7. Everyone’s acting most of the time (aka no, it isn’t just you).
  8. You will never ever ‘feel’ as old as you are, which I think just means age isn’t something you feel. It’s just a fact.
  9. Early nights are good but nights when you get off to sleep easy are even better.
  10. People will let you down most often by accident not intent and so should usually be forgiven.
  11. Exercise is fun and makes you feel good. Actually, I think this is a thing we discover as children and then forget and then remember.
  12. Unfortunately, you have to learn your own lessons. No one else can learn them for you else we’d all be practically perfect by now.
  13. Kindness is the single most beautiful quality in another human.
  14. There is no such thing as a ‘guilty pleasure’.
  15. Life is everything that happens to you, not just the best bits, so stop feeling like you’re on a detour. You’re not.
  16. It’s very unlikely you’re going to fall in love with someone you meet on a train/plane, but this will not stop you thinking this is definitely going to happen to you each time you travel.
  17. Don’t try and save calories with your choice of milk – just buy the blue top.
  18. Always keep a pair of trousers that are slightly too big for days when you want to feel thin and have people fussing that your clothes are ‘hanging off you’. It’s amazing what people fretting over you like this does for your mood.
  19. Disliking certain foods is pretty obnoxious so maybe just try to like eggs, OK?
  20. Strictly Come Dancing is indisputably a great piece of television.
  21. Weekday hangovers are NEVER worth it. Weekend ones should be reserved for special occasions: Christmas, weddings, karaoke, etc.
  22. Years pass quickly so just keep an eye on them and make sure you’re not putting off too much stuff or being put off by too much stuff that takes a while.
  23. Accept compliments with a simple ‘thank you’ instead of batting them back in the giver’s face.
  24. People you love will make choices for themselves that you strongly disagree with – remaining supportive and honest is a tricky trick. Do your best.
  25. It’s almost never shorts-and-sandals weather in the UK, so unless you’re leaving the country, don’t bother buying any. Also, shorts are the worst unless you literally don’t have any thighs, so just wear something else.
  26. Words are nourishing so find someone who puts them in an order that makes sense to you and gobble them up.
  27. Always apologise.
  28. Don’t start smoking/give up now.
  29. Finding words for your feelings is sometimes so frustrating you want to tear your own skin off – don’t. Just practise and you’ll get better.
  30. Change your mind as often as you need to.
  31. Watching television is a legitimate hobby.

What do you think of my list? Any you want to add? Please do leave your own learnings/wisdoms below!

P.S. 4 reasons why turning 30 is great, 7 things Nicky will never do again now she is out of her 20s and  10 things she’s learned since turning 30.

P.P.S What do you do on your 31st birthday anyway?

Beauty gift ideas that aren’t perfume

December 1, 2015

At the risk of sounding like a Scrooge on the first day of December, I’ve decided to write about how little perfume excites me. It’s a product that baffles me year round, but it’s especially inescapable in the run-up to Christmas. To all those of you who are expecting or purchasing perfume for Christmas, I can only apologise. I’m happy smelly water brings you pleasure – it just does nothing for me.

A random rant about perfume | Everyday30.com

Most people’s first impressions of perfume are related to their mum getting ready to go out for the night; my mum, however, has very sensitive skin, so perfume never featured in my childhood memories, and as such I still find most of them overpowering. The only times that I have worn perfume regularly, I’ve managed to link it to such dubious memories that when I’m caught off-guard by a hit of the same scent in another context, it makes me feel nauseous. For example, at uni, I spent a year wearing Paul Smith’s Rose eau de parfum, which I bought on impulse in duty free when the dollars with which I’d returned from my holidays were burning a hole in my pocket. I would leave the house in a cloud of ‘Rose’, feeling my best, only to wake up the next day nursing a hangover with the stench of stale roses – and regret – engulfing me.

SFTW: Black Friday; Netball Saturday; Lazy Sunday

November 29, 2015

I hope you’re enjoying your weekend! I can barely remember a weekend I’ve looked forward to more than this one – having worked 11 days straight, including two conferences, I was more than ready to relax.

Being me, my relaxation centred around getting back to the gym after far too long; man, it felt good. As I’ve bored on about before, for me, exercising is as much about having fun and improving my mood, as it is about fighting fat, and I feel all the better for having had a good sweat.

I was also very happy to spend Saturday watching a netball tournament that showcased some of the our best homegrown players along with some exciting imports from South Africa and Jamaica. And best of all? In a room full of netball players, I begin to look almost normal height.

Store-cupboard saviours: review of Simply Cook

November 26, 2015

Recently, I’ve been so busy with work, social commitments and life in general, that cooking dinner from scratch every night – which is how I usually roll – has fallen quite a long way down my list of priorities. Usually at such times, Juan and I order a takeaway – either a lamb shish from our beloved FM Mangal or a sourdough pizza from Franco Manca. However, ordering more than one takeaway a week leaves me feeling pretty disgusted with myself – plus, although our favourites offer good value, they’re still a stealth drain on our bank account. So when Simply Cook asked me to road-test their products, it was great timing on their part.

Storecupboard saviours: review of Simply Cook | Everyday30.com

Simply Cook is a monthly recipe kit delivery service: each pack contains four kits (one per week), and these include an easy-to-follow recipe card (with a handy shopping list that you can tear off) and a box of spices and pastes that you add to the ingredients you buy. The recipes are updated each season, so there’s a lot of scope to try new dishes, but you can request four of the same dish if you prefer.

If I’m being honest, I was a little worried that I would hate this product because I’m a bit of a purist when it comes to taking short-cuts in home cooking, and I’m not one for picking up recipe cards during my weekly shop. However, the Simply Cook model won me over for three reasons.
