How primers won me over

January 14, 2015

Max Factor Face Finity primer

I’m pretty lazy when it comes to make-up – I do wear it every day, but once I’ve put on my essentials (base, concealer, blusher), I can’t usually be bothered to do much else.

Still, even though I don’t wear much, I do find it annoying when it’s all worn off by the afternoon and I suddenly look a bit ill (Does this happen to you, too? You skip the make-up and everyone thinks you’re ill?). If I’m going to go to the effort of putting on make-up, I want it to last all day.

Then I read this post about primers via London Beauty Queen. For those of you who haven’t heard of primers, they essentially ‘prime’ the skin for make-up by creating a smooth base for the products to stick to for longer. There are tonnes of primers out there and they can all help to ‘perfect’ the skin in different ways: some help to hide pores, others cover redness or fight spots. I was mostly interested in a primer that would help my make-up to last, so I tried the Max Factor Face Finity primer (£10.99) – you guys, it’s brilliant! Suddenly, my make-up lasts the entire day. It takes seconds to apply in the morning – just smooth it over your face before putting on your make-up as normal.

Now that I’ve been won over by primers, I’m keen to try the Smashbox primers next – they’re a bit pricier, but I’ve heard many great things about them and this one for ‘blemish-prone’ (spotty) skin sounds great.

Do you wear a primer? If so, which is your favourite?

The Smashbox primer is amazing – I got given a free sample-sized one when I bought a bunch of stuff at Sephora in the States on holiday a few years ago (why don’t we have one in the UK?) and I used it sparingly because I didn’t want to get through it too quickly. Turns out it lasted for ages! You need to use so little of it and it leaves the texture of your skin feeling amazing. I’m now using (when I can remember/be bothered) a Bare Minerals primer which is really good too – got given a minerals kit for Christmas and it’s a whole new world! My problem with primer, even if it takes no time at all, is that it’s an extra step… if I do moisturiser, primer, foundation and concealer, that feels like too much bother. So I often skip it. But I can’t deny it makes for a much smoother finish!

I think many people (myself included) have this psychological block about ‘another step’ but in reality it only takes about 10 seconds!

I am just giving a primer a whirl actually. The Bare Minerals one and I think it’s winning me over too as it gives my make up a much better finish. Although I do keep thinking it’s another thing to run out and cost me money lol 😉 but I do love make up…

Yep, the more I learn about make-up, the more money I spend!

Yes, they changed my life! (sort of). Apparently the Rimmel primers are good and cheap too.
