Why you should try a coffee subscription

Do you like coffee? I love it – not so much for the caffeine hit, but for the taste and ritual of it, I suppose. My morning cup is basically what gets me out of bed in the morning (that and a toddler jumping on my head) and it’s one of Rose and my favourite things to do together. I’m always up for a cup of coffee and will spend £2.50 on a flat white without batting an eyelid.

What about at home? If you’re reasonably into coffee, you might have a cafetière, or even a stovetop, but which coffee do you buy? Ground coffee from the supermarket, right? The good stuff though; maybe Taylors. No judgement here! In fact, that’s exactly what I did for the longest time, but I’ve since discovered that starting with decent, freshly ground coffee can really make all the difference and that’s where coffee subscription services can be great.

We signed up for a coffee subscription when I worked in an office – there were three of us who all loved coffee and who always shared a cafetière in the morning, and having nice coffee just made it a bit more special. The great thing about a subscription is that they (a) grind the coffee for you, and (b) grind it to suit whatever coffee-making method you use (cafetière, stovetop, espresso machine, etc.). Obviously, it’s going to be a bit more expensive than a bag of supermarket-bought coffee, but there are always great offers to be had (see below!) and you can easily offset the cost by buying fewer coffee-shop coffees per week.

Full disclosure here: we’re pretty serious about coffee in our house (Pete takes on all the coffee-making duties actually). We have a grinder and an espresso machine, and we were buying coffee beans from local shops (supporting local businesses and all that), but because I work from home and he cycles to work, neither of us regularly passed one and we kept running out of coffee. Plus, we were getting a bit bored of buying the same beans all the time. We love the variety that you can get from coffee subscriptions – and the security of knowing we’ll never run out. Also, they make great birthday/Christmas/new house presents.
