The 5 best coffee shops in Manchester

March 16, 2015

Whether you live in Manchester, work here or are just visiting us for the day, these are the five coffee joints I would recommend for a really good cup of coffee (and the occasional sweet treat too).

1. Grindsmith

When it comes to the coffee itself, this is my top pick. I work close to the Grindsmith pod in Greengate Square and always get an excellent cup and fantastic service here. They also make a delightful cold brew if you’re into it. And if you are, here’s how to make cold brew coffee at home the easy way.

2. Fig + Sparrow

A relatively recent coffee-shop discovery which I actually found out about via a vlog by someone who was visiting Manchester for the day. I’ve now visited multiple times both for coffee and for lunch – there is a short but seriously delicious menu of soups, sandwiches and salads.

3. Pot Kettle Black

My top pick in terms of setting goes to PKB, which is inside Manchester’s stunningly beautiful Barton Arcade. This is also my go-to destination for those rare occasions when I want a sweet treat to eat with my coffee – they serve a caramel and peanut shortbread that just ticks all of my boxes when I’m looking for something sweet of an afternoon.

4. TAKK

My new favourite coffee shop. I first went here a few weeks ago when Rachel was in Manchester, for a well-deserved brunch and lots of coffee after a session taking pictures for the blog. I highly recommend the rarebit (pictured).

5. Caffeine and Co.

I recommend the branch in Longford Park – it’s the only one I’ve been to. In addition to the fantastic coffee, they also bake a wide range of sweet and savoury delights on the premises and the open kitchen means you can even watch them doing it. This branch is set in a pavilion inside the park, directly opposite an excellent children’s playground, so this isthe perfect coffee pitstop when I have my beautiful niece in tow.

P.S. A really easy way to cold-brew coffee, ideas for what to cook when all you really want is a takeaway, and the perfect breakfast pancakes that just happen to be healthy too.
