When all you want is a takeaway…

February 20, 2015

We’ve all been there: it’s Friday night, you’re knackered and you really can’t be arsed to make anything for dinner. So, as a special treat, you think, ‘Let’s have a takeaway!’. Fine by me, no judgement here. Except, they’re so often full of crap ingredients, salt and fat, which I wouldn’t mind if they actually tasted good, but they rarely live up to my expectations (apart from good fish and chips; you can’t beat good fish and chips). Plus, takeaways are expensive. So instead of forking out for one, there are a few failsafe dishes I turn to when I’m in need of a treat. And because these are recipes for when you want a takeaway, they all take less than 15 minutes to make and I can pick up the ingredients from the Sainsbury’s Local on my way home.

Easy meal ideas for when you just want order a takeaway

For real comfort food, I always turn to pasta, and my favourite is a proper carbonara in all it’s bacon-y glory. Rachel Eat’s cacio e pepe is outrageously good and only requires pasta, cheese and black pepper.

For a retro treat, I love a jacket potato. I absolutely will not accept a microwaved jacket potato (bleugh), but I do sometimes nuke the potato for five minutes or so to save time, and then finish it in the oven. My favourite filling is lots of butter, baked beans and cheese (the classic combo), but you could also top it with one of those tuna-and-sweetcorn deli fillers. Put them both together if you want to go all out.

But my favourite genre of pick-me-up dishes is breakfast for dinner (or ‘brinner’, if you will). Poached or fried eggs on toast, maybe with a little mashed avocado underneath? Or scrambled eggs made with lots of cream, served with smoked salmon and bagels. On the egg theme, wouldn’t it be quite fun to have a dippy egg with soldiers for dinner? Or is that just me?

Failing that, you can never, ever, go wrong with a bacon sandwich. Make it a BLAT if you want some vegetables too.

And if you’re looking for a spot of TV to eat your dinner in front of (because this is definitely the kind of food that should be eaten off your lap), then Rose has got your back – check out her recommended TV series and top films to cry to.

Have I convinced you to skip the takeaway tonight? What’s your favourite Friday-night treat?

I love the ideas huni, but avocado (shudder). I am not sure poached eggs on toast (although I love it – with the dreaded A naturally) would do it for me if I fancies a Chinese 🙂 x

Yes, that’s what Rose said! I suppose eating breakfast at dinner is enough of a novelty that it feels like a treat for me!
